Congratulations, girl. It woulda been great to have you out for RAGNAR, but oh well.

Honestly, you can look at this as the opportunity to do *everything* right—follow the right training plans, don't rush anything, start from zero, and be 10 times better than you ever were before.

Big ups.

Amy, as you already know, life is one big continual rehab.

Twenty nine years ago I broke my left femur jumping out of a burning car at 45 miles an hour.

Don't ask.

I still have said rod in my femur because, frankly, I don't want anybody cutting into my leg again. And the food in hospitals isn't any better now than it was then.

That little incident was worth three months of so-called rehab...but let's face it, it's been twenty nine years of rehab.

Oh, and I do pick up short wave broadcasts from Radio Krakow in my left leg on cloudy nights. Good thing I speak Polish, eh. And I do love Chopin.

Anyway, this is just my long winded way of saying you are living proof of Nietzsche's phrase about what makes you stronger.

That, and your dauntless sense of humor.

BTW during my fifteen mile solo lope along the Ottawa River tomorrow, I'll run some sprints for you...and project wellness in your direction.

You'll be back in action before you can say, "Oy!"

All the best,

David

I like the idea of making them into a quilt. My race tees go through a process--they start as shirts for short (3 mile or less) mild weather runs and trips to the farmers market, then they become camping and yard work shirts, then rags.

I know you're not the gym rat type, but have you considered doing multiple-joint movements 3 times a week? Squats, deadlifts, bench press, still dips, pull-ups (assisted--at first anyway)--at truly challenging weights--can help you gain functional muscle mass. Not sure how much the extra muscle weight would help your running, but weight training would sure help stave off the osteoporosis monster (or so they say).

You're right--weight loss is not the same as fitness. And the ones that are potentially offensive might not be so if we didn't have an enormous issue with body image in this country. There's a culture of incredibly unhealthy skinniness, easily seen in magazines, television, movies--everywhere. It's ubiquitous in our entertainment media, and its reach and influence terrifies me. Truly.

Having said all that, I think I'd like a boomerang made of bacon. But damn I love bacon. :)

I know, I know. But, about, say, ten or twelve pounds of muscle would be really sharp.
